Moon at Nine By Deborah Ellis

Moon at Nine

How many secrets do you hide from everyone?

Moon at Nine takes place in Iran, the home country of fifteen-year-old Farrin. She is the daughter of two wealthy parents who regularly throw illegal gatherings, which has taught Farrin to keep secrets. If the Revolutionary Guard were to find out, they would be sent to jail or worse.

Farrin doesn’t have any friends, so when she meets Sadria at school she doesn’t expect much. However, the two girls become best friends. Farrin is happy, but soon realizes her feelings are more then just friendship…

Let’s make a pact. Let’s look at the moon every night at nine, and that way if we are not physically together, we will be together in spirit!”

Moon at Nine is an excellently written book by Deborah Ellis. It deals with mature things such as murder, war, torture, and homophobia. If you can’t handle those themes, I would not recommend this book as it has them in it. However, if you can, I highly recommend it. It portrays a lesbian main character very well, so if you’re sick of books with only straight main characters, Moon at Nine is the book for you.
