The Truth
about Stories
By Thomas
King
"Don't say in the years to come that you would have lived your life differently if only you had heard this story. You've heard it now." Thomas King
Stories. Every story we
share becomes a piece of who we are, as does every story we hear.
Stories show true character; they reveal a person’s truth by what a person shares. The
Truth about Stories, written by Thomas King is an example of how stories
shape our lives and perhaps the future of those who are listening.
Thomas King is an author who shares personal struggles and
further, the struggle of Native people in North America or what various Original people
recognize as, Turtle Island.
Throughout the novel, Thomas King explores challenges,
success’, pain and healing through stories.
He gives the reader opportunities to come to their own
thoughts and feelings about their relationships with a country, Native peoples
and the land.
He does this so brilliantly by allowing the reader to make up
their minds as to how they see themselves in the story of colonization,
assimilation, stereotypes and cultural appropriation. Correspondingly, he addresses personal responsibility
and accountability of how the past affects the present thereby directing the
future by the stories we hear and choose to share.
King asks the tough questions, some which takes the reader to dark
places but in return, offers reconciliation to those who are and willing to listen.
